Invited Artists

2nd June – 23rd July 2016

Hamilton Gallery, Sligo

You are cordially invited to attend the opening of “A Terrible Beauty is Born”, a visual response by 70 Irish artists to the iconic poem ‘Easter, 1916’ by W.B. Yeats, at the Hamilton Gallery on Thursday 2nd June at 6 pm.

About “A Terrible Beauty is Born”
Hamilton Gallery invited Ireland’s leading contemporary artists to create an image 20cm x 20cm inspired by W. B. Yeats’s poem Easter, 1916. The exhibition A Terrible Beauty is Born features the work of over 70 visual artists. It is a dynamic, provocative and comprehensive response, 100 years on, by the shapers of our contemporary visual arts culture to the events of 1916, with W. B. Yeats’ iconic Easter, 1916 poem used as a springboard.

Light refreshments will be available at the opening

New solo Exhibition Next Thursday!

This work was produced over my one month residency in Berlin, at the Institute Für Alles Mögliche this summer.
During my stay I felt drawn to people and the way they can be judged in many ways, for example; by the manner in which they dress, or the posture they make. I started by collecting imagery from around Berlin, to make this series “Ich Bin”.
The blank faces give the viewer a sense of ghostly, anonymous figures; with only their clothes to give them some identity.
By using blank old pages with this series, the viewer is not drawn away by any words that may be written, and solely have the person in front of them to tell you their story!

Mr Yeats and Us

We both admire the work of W.B. Yeats, his use of language, his eloquence and the imagery in his poems. While one should not underestimate the importance of this imagery, however, and the many ways that one might use or respond to it, we have both found ourselves intrigued by other aspects of the man; his relationship with his family, his more esoteric pursuits and his extraordinary interest in spiritualism and the occult. We are also curious as to how, given his nationalist inclination, he rationalised his romantic, ‘Celtic Twilight’ view of Ireland with the reality of the country at that time. We hope that we can tease out an alternative dimension to the life of Mr Yeats, thereby complementing the more traditional view.
